There are two DVDs available at the moment with more to come. Viscount Down 1 DVD is about the Hunyani crash – with footage taken at the crash site the day after it happened. It is really the survivors story starting with their experiences from when the missile hit the aircraft to the crash landing and their dramatic exit from the burning aircraft. Three of the survivors tell the story of their narrow escape from being butchered along with the other 10 survivors who were bayoneted and shot to death. It also has a live interview with a SAS sergeant who was part of the search and rescue team that parachuted into the crash site, and his account of what they experienced. There is more live footage of 1) with the Rhodesian army Chaplain Lt. Col. The Reverend Bill Dodgen who tells of his experience at the crash site of the Viscount Umniati – 2) the interview between the BBC and Joshua Nkomo and 3) the Reverend Da Costa’s famous deafening silence sermon.
Viscount Down 2 is a brilliant DVD that captures the very special and moving Viscount Umniati Memorial service that took place on 9 February 2013. The service took a different format from the norm, with hymns sung by an ensemble of the Benoni high school choir and thrilling performances by their world-famous pipe band that won the Champion of Champions title for the 17th consecutive year. It records the flyover by a Harvard aircraft at precisely the moment the Rhodesian flag was being lowered as well as a salute by a Hawker Hunter jet in honour of the Viscount victims and Rhodesia’s 911. Another highlight of the day was the social event that took place after the service, in which the historic EDM 1029 in British Parliament was read out by the MC Mike Westcott, condemning the terrorist attacks on the Viscounts and the moral cowardice of world leaders who remained silent in what has become known as the deafening silence, followed by the draw for the famous Craig Bone painting of elephants known as “Mana Retreat” worth R 100,000 – won by a very lucky lady Brenda Cook from the USA. (Brenda elected a different painting because of freight logistics)
Another two DVD’s are being edited for production in about two months time. Viscount Down 3 has footage of the Viscount Memorial starting from when it was first being constructed to the unveiling ceremony and inauguration service in September 2012. Viscount Down 4 DVD also in the making, records footage taken at various events – such as the talk given by the Hunyani survivor Hans Hansen about his experiences and excerpts of other footage taken on my various promotional trips in South Africa as well as the UK, USA and Hawaii. A rather special occasion was the opening of the Memorial service of the Rhodesian Pioneers Association in Derby in 2012.
All these items will be obtainable as and when they are produced. Updates on progress will appear on our website and in our free newsletters and on our FaceBook page “Rhodesia’s Viscount disasters”.
